While we stopped at the Scotts Peak Dam boat ramp I noticed that many layers of the rock were a deep reddish purple.

Again on the road up to the nearby Red Knoll Lookout and in the vicinity, this type of geological formation persisted.  It seemed to be a sedimentary shale-like rock. The Australian Mechanics Association produced a paper with considerable detail.

I wonder if this rock was argillite.
